The Bald Soprano

Kako pravimo dnevom v tednu? – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

G. in ga. Smith, g. in ga. A Ionescovo besedilo nastavlja ogledalo naši vsakodnevni rutini, puhlosti in narejenosti.

Srečno in veliko ognja!

How do we call days in the week? Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. – How interesting!

When Eugène Ionesco decided to learn English, he started searching through the textbooks and quickly entered the world of multitude clichés and meaningless words. That inspired him to write a text, in which he would, with the help of long dialogues of characters, portray the emptiness of their living. He created a drama that isn’t really a drama. He marked it as an anti-play – story that isn’t really a story, with a title, which doesn’t say much about its content: The Bald Soprano.

In the story we meet a married couple, who doesn’t speak to each other. The second couple, doesn’t even know each other. And there’s two more, which …

Mr., Mrs. Smith and Martin, maid and Commander of firefighters are situated in an English landscape and are therefore safely removed from us which allows us to openly satirise their nonsense of living. However, Ionesco’s anti-play presents us a reflection of our daily routines, platitudes and fabricated realities. He challenges us to discover our own fire.

If only we would find that fire. And wouldn’t suppress it.

Good luck and lots of fire!
